Résumé : |
Introduction: The issue of food supplements is complex and concerns their effectiveness and safety
(composition, doses and side effects). There is little scientific evidence regarding their health benefits. An inventory of food supplements was carried out in the BAHRAM pharmacy in Saida, covering the months of February and March 2024. The study reveals important trends concerning production, name, composition, indications therapeutics, adverse effects, dosage forms and age groups targeted by these products. Material and Method: The inventory covered a sample of 210 food supplements, analyzing their origin, their name, their composition, their therapeutic indications, their adverse effects, their dosage forms and the targeted age groups. Data was collected from product labels and associated inserts. Results: Among the notable results, 66 % of the products were of Algerian origin, with a strong predominance of supplements based on vitamins (50.5 %) and medicinal plants (77 %). The most common therapeutic indications were treatment of flu and colds (71.4%) and strengthening immunity (16.6 %). About 49 % of products mentioned allergic or hypersensitivity effects, while 36 % indicated no adverse effects. The most common dosage forms were syrups (32.8 %) and tablets (25.2 %), and almost 60 % of products were intended for adults. Conclusion: The inventory highlights the importance of national production of food supplements in Algeria, while highlighting a trend towards the importation of Asian products. The diversity of products and therapeutic indications reflects the varied needs of consumers. Although most products do not have adverse effects, special attention should be paid to allergies and individual reactions. The varied dosage forms make it possible to meet consumer preferences. Finally, the diversity of targeted age groups highlights the importance of nutrition and health at all stages of life. |
