| Résumé : |
The management of pharmaceutical waste in Algeria remains a major challenge for public
health and environmental protection, due to the lack of structured practices, limited public awareness, and poor enforcement of existing regulations. These wastes—expired, unused, or damaged medications—are often handled informally, particularly in households. Although legislation such as Law 01-19 exists, it is rarely applied and does not specifically address pharmaceutical waste. In hospitals and pharmacies, sorting is partially implemented, but the lack of infrastructure, specialized training, and collection circuits hinders proper management. A field survey conducted in the city of Saida among 201 households showed that 73% of respondents dispose of expired medications in regular trash, while only 12% return them to pharmacies. However, 97% expressed willingness to change their behaviour if appropriate incentives are offered. Among 35 pharmacies surveyed, 80% had a dedicated waste storage area, but only 48% applied waste sorting procedures. Although most pharmacists are aware of the issue, two-thirds were unaware of the current legal framework and many reported insufficient supports from health authorities. This study highlights the structural gaps at both the household and professional levels and proposes concrete solutions: establishing collection points in pharmacies, launching awareness campaigns, and improving coordination between stakeholders to promote sustainable pharmaceutical waste management. |
